Cookie FAQ

A cookie is a small file stored by a Web site on your computer's hard drive. The file contains information about you and your preferences. When you return to a Web site that has given you a cookie, the Web site reads the cookie so it can almost instantaneously customize its pages to comply with the preferences you've specified.

What kind of information can Microsoft find out about me with cookies?
We can only find out what you decided to tell us when you visited one of our Web sites. For example, if you haven't typed your e-mail name in a box on one of our sites, then there's no way we can figure it out by leaving a cookie on your machine.

Does a cookie let Microsoft look at the rest of my computer?
No. The only information Microsoft can see is the information stored in the cookie. Similarly, no site can see another site's cookie.

Can I make Microsoft ask me before it stores a cookie on my computer?
Yes. Users of Internet Explorer can do this for all Web sites they visit. If you use Internet Explorer and want to be asked before Web sites store cookies on your computer, try these steps.

What happens if I delete my cookies?
We will no longer be able to provide you with personalized service. We won’t be able to tell you about anything you've asked us to track or customize — for example, MoneyCentral stock reports, or colors on the MSN.com page. It can also affect your ability to shop online. It is important that you only delete your cookies when you are certain you no longer want any of these services. If you want to delete your cookies, try these steps.

How can I prevent cookies from ever being stored on my computer?
Even if you delete a Web site's cookies from your computer, as soon as you start using MSN.com or many other Web sites, new cookies will be created. If you want to prevent cookies from ever being stored on your computer, try these steps. However, doing so will prevent Web sites from providing you with personalized service, which may include certain features of various Web sites.
